The installation of the Outsystems platform is not exactly a breeze. No walk in the park either.
However. I needed to rebuild the port assignment on the Alpha Application Server since that ran on port 80. So, I moved that to port 81. That needed changes in router and firewall settings as well. A bit of port forwarding too. As soon as Alpha's AS ran on port 81, installing the Outsystems Service Center completed nicely on the server. So, now I have the Service Studio on my development machine, and the platform server and service center on the separate server. Next, I need to contact the server from the service studio, but not tonight anymore. Tomorrow is another day. I'll keep you guys posted.

I found this document to be valuable during the installation process. It is to be expected, that you can not simply use the "all-in-one-download-installer", since you will probably have separate machines for development and a separate application server, possibly even a separate database engine server. www.outsystems.com/forums/discussion/10699/how-to-manually-install-the-outsystems-platform-8-0-community-edition/As said before, installation becomes a bit complex if you use this, but with this manual close at hand you will get there after a bit of perseverance. In my case, I used a setup of different server and development machine. Both the Outsystems platform server and Dbms are on the same physical server. So, the Service Center needs to go on the physical server, together with the platform server. You then need to configure the Service Center and THAT's where you connect to your DBMS as well. So Boggs, if you could not find any database to publish to, this is most probably where you lost it during install/config. At the desktop of your server should be an icon named "Outsystems Configuration Tool". Doubleclick it and there you will see a dialog appearing where you need to insert the different logins and locate the dbms under the database tab. It is advisable to have both your servers IP and the document above printed in front of you when you start this. They also have a checklist somewhere explaining which pre-install checks to perform regarding for instance .NET on your server etc. Might be a good thing to read upfront as well. When configuration of the server like this is done, the installer asks you if it should install the service center which you do want. The Service Studio you need to install on your development machine gives less of a headache although on running it, it must be connected to your platform server which puzzled me a bit as well. You need to connect to the platform server, credentials are admin/admin which can save you a box of tissues and a lot of search time. From there, the Service Studio should be able to connect to your platform server, and you should be able to create/upload your first espace. More experiences I don't have to share at this time. Will report as soon as I have something mentionable.

As said before, manual installation onto a platform existing out of several separate machines is not easy and it provides several interesting challenges. I have met several, amongst which the fact that some system solutions did not get installed the first time around and needed manual installation as well. The reward for all of this hard work and puzzling however is an astonishing system! Beautifully designed, offering everything any developer could ever want. Using the instruction videos the learning curve is shortened remarkably. It seems, my platform is operational since of yesterday, and I started developing an application I already had created in Alpha Five, to migrate it to OutSystems. The first experiences are very very positive. Coming from Alpha Five, Outsystems is a relief and a joy to work with. I can recommend it to anyone. Be gone with stability issues and embedded browse problems that Alpha can't seem to fix (they haven't for over a decade!) and patches introducing new bugs that weren't there before the patch. If you want a professional job done, you'd better use a professional tool to do it. OutSystems can be just that.
